TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My teaching philosophy is centered around the tenets of social justice, critical pedagogy, and social-emotional learning. I believe that emphasizing the importance of students’ unique voices, opinions, backgrounds, and experiences is integral to creating a vibrant classroom culture and a safe space for students to learn and grow. My philosophy is heavily influenced by bell hooks’ writings on education, particularly Teaching Critical Thinking and Teaching to Transgress. I also pull from the philosophies of Popular Education and Critical, SentiPensante, and Feminist pedagogies, respectively.
I see my role in the classroom as being a co-learner and facilitator. I work to create opportunities for students to find depth and meaning in learning from one another, as members of a thriving learning community. I build my courses around weekly discussions on complex social issues, collaborative assignments, student-led activities, a dynamic curriculum responsive to student interests, and working to co-create a classroom culture based on mutual respect and shared inquiry. |
